  1. Upton Resident says:

Great news BUT what happens when these children leave school?

Youth unemployment is now a THIRD higher than it was in 1997.

Nearly one million people between the ages of 16 and 24 are out of work – that is ONE in SIX.

What do you propose to do about this?

  2. Dear Resident

    Thank you for your comment.

It goes without saying that any unemployment especially youth unemployment is an unacceptable effect of the global recession and a sobering thought is that behind every statistic there is a human story, this is precisely why the Govenment has supported the economy the way it has. As a direct result of measures taken by the Government there are at least 500,000 people still in jobs who otherwise would be unemployed, those measures it has to be said were opposed by the Conservatives, whose policy it is to let the recession take its course ignoring the devastating effect on individuals and the economy.

In relation to youth unemployment, the Government has launched The Backing Young Britain campaign http://interactive.bis.gov.uk/backingyoungbritain/ , which will see £1 billion invested in a Future Jobs Fund that will create 100,000 new jobs for young people and a further 50,000 jobs in unemployment hotspots.

An additional £40 million will be injected into a new mentoring network for young people entering the job market and around 10,000 work experience places will be created for unemployed 18 -21 year olds.
